The American Hotel (formerly Hotel Fort Wayne) Detroit, MI
The American Hotel sits abandoned right next to The Masonic Temple. The structure has 12 floors counting the roof. There is a small stage area and dance floor on the 2nd floor that continues to get rained on due to the broken skylight. One small plant is growing out of the crumbled plaster and a few old chairs remain in that room. With a lot of TLC this building could be beautiful once again. There is some vandalism, graffiti, scrapping, and water damage. Just one year ago you could see them boarding up a doorway where someone had gotten in, or see someone come running out of the place when they set the alarm off. Now the fence is knocked down & the front door WIDE open for visitors. Perhaps the active Masonic Temple will keep some scrappers away but the real damage being done is the rain dripping onto the 2nd floor. The skylight needs to be covered and some patchwork to the roof in that room if they really want to preserve this building. The roof-top is solid. Nice, wide open area with great views of downtown. To the east you can see past the old Brewster Projects, the south shows a beautiful skyline. I will continue my research on this building and update it here as I learn more on The American Hotel.
